Real People. Real Change.

Every one of these stories belongs to a person who was told โ€” by life, by circumstance, or by silence โ€” that literacy was not for them. They proved that completely wrong.

The Words That Changed Their Lives

The First Word She Ever Read"MARKET"

"I spent 30 years selling pepper and tomatoes at Rumuola Market. Every day I walked past the sign that read RUMUOLA MARKET and thought it was just a shape โ€” like a drawing. When I read it for the first time, I stood there for five minutes. I was reading my own market. I had been there 30 years and was finally seeing it for the very first time.

Now I keep a small notebook. Every day I write what I sold and how much money I made. My accounts are better than they have ever been. My daughter says I am now a proper businesswoman. I say โ€” I always was. I just needed the tools."

The First Thing He Ever Read AloudPsalm 23:1

"I have been a deacon at my church for 22 years. Every Sunday I would say 'Amen' loudly so nobody would know I was not reading along. For 22 years I did this.

When I finally read Psalm 23 aloud at Highflyer โ€” just with my tutor โ€” I wept. Not sad tears. Something else entirely. Like a wall around my heart for my whole life had finally come down.

When the pastor asked me to read the scripture for the whole congregation three months later, I stood up and read it from the Bible with my own eyes and my own voice. The congregation clapped. They don't know what that moment truly meant. Only I know."

The First Letter She Ever Wrote"Dear Daughter..."

"My daughter lives in Lagos. For forty years, whenever she called I would talk โ€” but I could never write to her. When I finished Expression Class, the first thing I did was write her a letter. In my own hand. In my own words.

I wrote: 'Dear daughter. I am writing this myself. I learned how at Highflyer. I am proud of myself and I want you to be proud too. Your mother.'

She called when she received it, crying so hard she couldn't speak for three minutes. When she finally spoke she said โ€” 'Mama, I framed it. I put it on my wall.' That letter is on her wall in Lagos right now. I wrote it. Me. At 67 years old."

The First Sign He Ever Read"DANGER"

"I work on construction sites. There are warning signs everywhere. For twenty years, I had to wait for someone to tell me what they said.

When I read the word DANGER on my own for the first time, I didn't feel proud. I felt safe. For the first time in twenty years on a building site, I felt genuinely safe.

My children are in school now. When they come home with homework, I sit with them and read it. Not do it for them โ€” that is their job. But I can sit with them and read it. That was all I ever wanted."
